Getting a business website live is less complicated than it looks, but the order you do things in matters. Most delays and cost overruns come from starting the design before the basics are decided. Here's the sequence that avoids that.
1. Decide what the website is for
Start with the job the site has to do. Is it there to bring in enquiries, take orders, show your work, take bookings, or simply prove you're a real business? Pick one main goal and one or two supporting ones. That decision shapes everything else: which pages you need, what the homepage says first and what a visitor should do next.
2. Choose your domain name
Your domain is your address online, so keep it short, easy to say aloud and easy to spell. Use your business name where you can, and check that the matching social media handles are available. Register it in your own name or your business's name, and keep the login details yourself, so you always control it regardless of who builds the site.
3. Plan the pages
Most business sites need a small set of pages: a home page that says what you do and for whom, pages for your main services or products, an about page that shows who is behind the business, and a contact page with clear ways to reach you. Add pages only when they have a purpose. A short, clear site usually converts better than a large, vague one.
4. Gather your content before design starts
This is the step most people skip, and it's the one that causes the most delay. Prepare the text for each page, your logo and brand colours, and real photos of your work, team or products. Placeholder content leads to a site that looks finished but says nothing. If writing isn't your strength, a copywriter or your agency can help, but the information about your services, pricing approach and policies has to come from you.
5. Choose how it will be built
Broadly, you can use a website builder, a template on a content management system, or a custom-built site. Builders are quick and inexpensive for very simple needs. Custom builds suit businesses that need specific functionality, stronger performance or a design that isn't a template with your logo swapped in. The right choice depends on your goal, your budget and how much you'll want to change over time. Our guide to what a website costs in Pakistan explains what moves the price.
6. Design for phones first
Most of your visitors will arrive on a mobile phone, so design for a small screen first and scale up. Keep the main action, whether that's calling, messaging on WhatsApp, booking or buying, visible without scrolling and easy to tap. Make sure pages load quickly, because slow sites lose visitors before they've read anything.
7. Build in the basics of search visibility
A site that no one can find doesn't do its job. From the start, give every page a clear title and description, use a sensible heading structure, describe images properly and make sure the site loads fast. These fundamentals are far cheaper to build in than to add later. Our SEO checklist for small businesses walks through them.
8. Test before you launch
Check every page and form on a phone and a computer. Send yourself a test enquiry and confirm it actually arrives. Read everything again for mistakes, and confirm that contact details, prices and policies are correct. A short review with checkpoints along the way, rather than a first look at launch, is what prevents nasty surprises.
9. Launch, then keep going
Going live is the start, not the end. Connect the site to Google Search Console so you can see how it performs in search, track where enquiries come from, and plan regular updates. Add new content over time, and revisit the site as your services change. For most business websites, the period from a first discovery call to launch is a matter of weeks, depending on scope, with e-commerce and custom functionality taking longer.
Doing it yourself or with help
Plenty of small sites can be built without an agency, especially simple ones. Working with a team makes sense when you need custom design, an online store, booking or lead-management features, or a site built to perform well in search from day one. If that's you, our web development team can scope it properly after a short discovery call — see how we scope and price work, or get in touch and tell us what you're building.
